Strathesk House is one of the few surviving grand old mansions in the York St - Windmill Hill “Dress-circle” area of Launceston, a National Trust classified precinct just outside the CBD. It has been saved from near-dereliction and has been restored to its former glory over the past 10 years. Built in 1876 by W.S. Bell, a prominent local merchant and brother of Renison Bell of West Coast mining fame, it eventually passed to Mr James Boag, probably the most famous of the early owners of Strathesk House. He & his father established Boags Brewery in 1883, which is in the same location today, and can be seen in the “old town” which is overlooked by the property. James Boag, his wife & nine children lived in the house until his death in 1918. He built the Coachhouse wing in 1896, and carried out extensive groundworks on the property.
Literally surrounded by parks and discrete old-world gardens, but within a few minutes walk of restaurants, shops and attractions, Strathesk House offers the best of Tasmania’s special lifestyle to the discerning visitor.
